How the formula works

Vrije Universiteit Brussel official sources state that averages or total scores use course marks weighted by credits; this calculator uses the local 20-point marks as grade points and ECTS/course credits as weights. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Vrije Universiteit Brussel official sources define the local grade scale and credit-weighted calculation, but tolerance, jury, resit, repeat, or grade-replacement rules are conditional and were not stated as one universal machine-calculable rule. Repeated courses are flagged for manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Vrije Universiteit Brussel courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 0 (0.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 3 (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 6 (6.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.00 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Belgium GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Another university in Belgium can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Vrije Universiteit Brussel?

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Vrije Universiteit Brussel config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.
