GPA Calculator for Japan

GPAWorld covers 10 universities in Japan. Between them they use 3 different grading scales, the most common being the 4.00 GPA scale at 6 of them. They also round the cumulative average in 2 different ways. That is why this site keeps one grading configuration per university instead of one per country — a single "Japan GPA formula" would be wrong for most students who used it.

The same grades, two different GPAs in Japan

This is the clearest argument against using one national formula. Take a student who earns their university's second-best grade in four courses— identical academic performance, on paper — and run it through each institution's own rules:

International Christian University

Second-best grade: B (3 points)

3.00

Semester GPA

Kyoto University

Second-best grade: A (4 points)

4.00

Same effort, same relative result, different number — because the scales, point values and rounding rules are set by each university rather than by Japan. A calculator that ignores this gives most students the wrong figure.

How universities in Japan compare

Looking at the Japan configurations side by side: 5 of the 10 use plus/minus grades while the rest award whole bands only, so an "A−" is a real grade at some and does not exist at others; 9 publish the percentage range behind each letter, which lets you work backwards from a mark to a grade; repeated courses are handled 2 different ways across the group. Each university's own page spells out which of these apply to you.

Common questions about GPA in Japan

Is there one GPA formula for all universities in Japan?

No. The 10 Japan universities covered here use 3 different grading scales between them, so the same grades can produce very different GPAs. Pick your university from the list on this page.

How do I calculate my CGPA at a Japan university?

Open your university's page from the list above. Enter your current CGPA and completed credit hours, then add this semester's courses with their credit hours and grades. The grade options come from that university's own table, and the result is rounded using its own rule — so the number matches how your registrar calculates it.

Do Japan universities round GPA the same way?

No — this group alone uses 2 different rounding rules for the cumulative average: rounded to 2 dp, truncated to 2 dp. Truncating instead of rounding can be the difference between sitting just above or just below a scholarship threshold, so it is worth checking your own university's rule.

Why does my friend at another Japan university have a different GPA with the same grades?

Because the point values differ. Four courses at the second-best grade give 3.00 at International Christian University (B = 3.0 points) but 4.00 at Kyoto University (A = 4.0 points). Identical performance, different numbers.

Is my university missing from this Japan list?

Quite possibly — coverage is being expanded steadily, and each university is only added once its grading policy has been read from an official source and encoded. Send us the university name and a link to its published grading scale and we will add it.
