How the formula works

Tsukuba GPA uses the official GP table for graded course credits; the public page states the calculation formula was unchanged when the GP table was revised. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Tsukuba config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Tsukuba's public GPA page defines the post-2016 GP table and notes that the GPA formula is unchanged, but a general repeated-course replacement rule was not clear.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Tsukuba courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.30 points)
  • Course 23 credits x C (2.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x D (0.00 points)

The semester GPA is 2.10 and the updated CGPA is 2.79 using this university's rounding rules.
