How the formula works

Kyushu GPA is generated by multiplying grade-point values by unit credits and dividing the sum by total registered credit value. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Kyushu University config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Kyushu states that grades for repeated F or C units are replaced from 2015 onward, but the current engine cannot constrain replacement to only those previous grades.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Kyushu University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x S (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x C (1.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x F (0.00 points)

The semester GPA is 1.67 and the updated CGPA is 2.69 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Japan GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Kyushu University. Another university in Japan can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Kyushu University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades follow the exact GPA-counting flags stored in the Kyushu University config.

What about repeated courses?

Kyushu states that grades for repeated F or C units are replaced from 2015 onward, but the current engine cannot constrain replacement to only those previous grades.
