How the formula works

SGPA is the credit-weighted average of registered courses in a semester, excluding audit courses and S/X grades. CGPA is computed similarly across all semesters; E and F are counted in SGPA but not in CGPA. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the IIT Jodhpur config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The official IIT Jodhpur grading page explains grade points and SGPA/CGPA exclusion rules, but the repeated-course replacement calculation was not clear enough in the reviewed source to encode.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these IIT Jodhpur courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A* (10.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (8.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C- (5.00 points)

The semester GPA is 7.67 and the updated CGPA is 4.08 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic India GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for IIT Jodhpur. Another university in India can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the IIT Jodhpur config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

The official IIT Jodhpur grading page explains grade points and SGPA/CGPA exclusion rules, but the repeated-course replacement calculation was not clear enough in the reviewed source to encode.
