How the formula works

QIU's UTM regulation defines grade points, credit earned, credit counted for GPA/CGPA, GPA as the semester grade point average, and CGPA as the cumulative grade point average across completed semesters. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Qaiwan International University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The official QIU UTM rule applies the better grade between the original and latest grade in CGPA while the current grade is applied in semester GPA; the current engine cannot fully automate that split behavior.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Qaiwan International University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (3.33 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (2.33 points)

The semester GPA is 3.22 and the updated CGPA is 3.05 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Iraq GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Qaiwan International University. Another university in Iraq can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Qaiwan International University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Qaiwan International University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

The official QIU UTM rule applies the better grade between the original and latest grade in CGPA while the current grade is applied in semester GPA; the current engine cannot fully automate that split behavior.
