How the formula works

GPA is total grade points divided by total credits taken in the semester. CGPA is total grade points divided by total credits for courses taken from the first semester through the current semester. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Universiti Malaya config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: For a student repeating a failed course or repeating the same course to improve academic performance, the better grade is taken into account; additional elective courses are counted cumulatively.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Universiti Malaya courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (3.30 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (2.30 points)

The semester GPA is 3.20 and the updated CGPA is 3.05 using this university's rounding rules.

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades follow the exact GPA-counting flags stored in the Universiti Malaya config.

What about repeated courses?

For a student repeating a failed course or repeating the same course to improve academic performance, the better grade is taken into account; additional elective courses are counted cumulatively.
