How the formula works

UPOU uses the General Weighted Average (GWA) for academic performance on its official 1.0 to 5.0 grading system. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of the Philippines Open University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: UPOU's official pages define the grading system and GWA use, but a general repeated-course replacement rule was not clear in public official sources.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of the Philippines Open University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 1.0 (1.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 1.75 (1.75 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 2.5 (2.50 points)

The semester GPA is 1.75 and the updated CGPA is 2.71 using this university's rounding rules.
