How the formula works

EPFL averages are calculated from final numerical marks weighted by course coefficients or ECTS credits. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the EPFL config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: EPFL official sources define the numeric scale and credit-weighted average, but public repeat, compensation, and retake rules vary by program or were not clear enough for automatic replacement. Repeated courses are therefore flagged for manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these EPFL courses:

Course 13 credits x 1.00 (1.00 points)
Course 23 credits x 1.75 (1.75 points)
Course 33 credits x 2.50 (2.50 points)

The semester GPA is 1.75 and the updated CGPA is 2.71 using this university's rounding rules.
