How the formula works

TU Graz curriculum rules state that module grades are the average of examinations completed as part of the module, weighted by ECTS credit points. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Graz University of Technology config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Graz University of Technology official sources define the 1-5 scale and/or ECTS-weighted average, but repeat, replacement, failed-attempt, and programme-specific subject-grade rules were not clear enough for automatic replacement. Repeated courses are therefore flagged for manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Graz University of Technology courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 1 (1.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 4 (4.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 5 (5.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.33 and the updated CGPA is 3.08 using this university's rounding rules.
