How the formula works

WU official materials define passing grades 1-4, failing grade 5, and refer to weighted GPA/weighted grade point average of exams completed as part of the relevant study program. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Vienna University of Economics and Business config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Vienna University of Economics and Business official sources define the 1-5 scale and/or ECTS-weighted average, but repeat, replacement, failed-attempt, and programme-specific subject-grade rules were not clear enough for automatic replacement. Repeated courses are therefore flagged for manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Vienna University of Economics and Business courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 1 (1.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 4 (4.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 5 (5.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.33 and the updated CGPA is 3.08 using this university's rounding rules.
