How the formula works

Heidelberg Scientific Computing states the final grade is the weighted average of modules in the study plan, with each module weighted by n/114 where n is its ECTS credit count. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 1 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 1 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Heidelberg University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Heidelberg public information found is programme-specific and says only the best fitting module combination may count when extra modules are taken; repeat and extra-module handling is manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.0 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Heidelberg University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 1.0 (1.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 2.0 (2.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 3.0 (3.00 points)

The semester GPA is 2.0 and the updated CGPA is 2.8 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Germany GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Heidelberg University. Another university in Germany can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Heidelberg University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 1 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Heidelberg University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

Heidelberg public information found is programme-specific and says only the best fitting module combination may count when extra modules are taken; repeat and extra-module handling is manual review.
