How the formula works

The University of Freiburg Faculty of Engineering states overall bachelor and master grades are calculated as arithmetic averages of module grades weighted by ECTS points, with programme-specific thesis/module weightings. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with floor rounding to 1 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with floor rounding to 1 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Freiburg config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Freiburg public information found is faculty/programme-specific; thesis double-weighting, individual course design weights, and repeat rules are conditional, so repeated-course handling is manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.0 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Freiburg courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 1.0 (1.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 2.0 (2.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 3.0 (3.00 points)

The semester GPA is 2.0 and the updated CGPA is 2.7 using this university's rounding rules.
