How the formula works

University of Genoa official sources state examinations are graded out of thirty, 18 is the minimum pass, and weighted averages use credits as weights. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Genoa config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Official sources confirm the grading scale and credit-weighted average, but repeated/retaken exam treatment is not stated clearly enough here to automate safely.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Genoa courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 18 (18.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 21 (21.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 24 (24.00 points)

The semester GPA is 21.00 and the updated CGPA is 7.15 using this university's rounding rules.
