How the formula works

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's semester credit hours by grade points, totaling quality points, and dividing by total credit hours taken. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the American University of Kuwait config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: AUK's catalog states that when a course is repeated, the highest grade earned is counted in GPA; repeat eligibility limits and exceptions remain policy details outside this simple calculator.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these American University of Kuwait courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C (2.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.00 using this university's rounding rules.
