How the formula works

UiT The Arctic University of Norway states that each letter grade is converted to a numeric value, multiplied by credits/studiepoeng, summed, and divided by the total credits included in the calculation. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 1 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 1 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the UiT The Arctic University of Norway config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: UiT The Arctic University of Norway official sources define the grade-point mapping and credit-weighted average used for admission or average-grade calculation, but repeat, improvement, replacement, failed-attempt, exchange-credit, and programme-specific ranking rules are conditional or not stated as one universal machine-calculable rule. Repeated courses are flagged for manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.0 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these UiT The Arctic University of Norway courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (5.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x D (2.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x E (1.00 points)

The semester GPA is 2.7 and the updated CGPA is 2.9 using this university's rounding rules.
