How the formula works

UCP official faculty regulations state final marks are 0-20, students earn ECTS with marks of 10 or higher, and final degree classifications are ECTS-weighted averages of curricular-unit and final-work credits. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Portuguese Catholic University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The official sources identify the grading scale and ECTS-weighted final-average calculation, but repeated/retaken course treatment is not complete enough to automate safely.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Portuguese Catholic University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 10 (10.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 13 (13.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 16 (16.00 points)

The semester GPA is 13.00 and the updated CGPA is 5.31 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Portugal GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Portuguese Catholic University. Another university in Portugal can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Portuguese Catholic University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Portuguese Catholic University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

The official sources identify the grading scale and ECTS-weighted final-average calculation, but repeated/retaken course treatment is not complete enough to automate safely.
