How the formula works

GPA and CGPA are calculated from grade points multiplied by credit hours divided by total relevant credit hours. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The official KFUPM bulletin source reviewed here defines grading and GPA calculation examples but does not provide a complete machine-calculable repeated-course replacement rule.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x D+ (1.50 points)

The semester GPA is 2.83 and the updated CGPA is 2.96 using this university's rounding rules.
