How the formula works

Semester and cumulative GPA use credit-hour-weighted grade points. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the King Saud University config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The official KSU regulations source reviewed here defines the grade scale but does not provide a complete machine-calculable repeated-course replacement rule.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these King Saud University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (5.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (4.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x D+ (2.50 points)

The semester GPA is 3.83 and the updated CGPA is 3.19 using this university's rounding rules.
