How the formula works

USAL grading regulations state the academic-record average is credits obtained, passed and recognised, multiplied by quantitative 0-10 marks and divided by total obtained credits; pass/fail-only records cannot produce the numeric average. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Salamanca config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The official sources identify the grading scale and weighted academic-record calculation, but repeated/retaken subject treatment is conditional or not complete enough to automate safely.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Salamanca courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 5.0 (5.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 5.3 (5.30 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 5.6 (5.60 points)

The semester GPA is 5.30 and the updated CGPA is 3.53 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Spain GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for University of Salamanca. Another university in Spain can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at University of Salamanca?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the University of Salamanca config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

The official sources identify the grading scale and weighted academic-record calculation, but repeated/retaken subject treatment is conditional or not complete enough to automate safely.
