How the formula works

Duke multiplies course credits by grade point values, sums those totals, and divides by total credits. GPAs are truncated to three decimals. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with floor rounding to 3 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with floor rounding to 3 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Duke University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The cited Duke GPA page defines GPA calculation and grading bases but does not provide a universal repeated-course GPA replacement rule.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.000 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Duke University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (3.30 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (2.30 points)

The semester GPA is 3.200 and the updated CGPA is 3.046 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic United States GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Duke University. Another university in United States can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Duke University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies floor rounding to 3 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Duke University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

The cited Duke GPA page defines GPA calculation and grading bases but does not provide a universal repeated-course GPA replacement rule.
