How the formula works

Penn calculates GPA at the end of each term using its official grade-point scale; GPA is a weighted average of credit units and grade points. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Pennsylvania config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The cited Penn undergraduate GPA policy states school-specific policies vary and does not provide a single machine-calculable repeated-course rule.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Pennsylvania courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (3.30 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (2.30 points)

The semester GPA is 3.20 and the updated CGPA is 3.05 using this university's rounding rules.
