How the formula works

GPA is computed by multiplying course credits by grade points to get quality points, summing them, and dividing by total credit units. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the American University of Bahrain config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: AUBH states that if a course is repeated, the highest grade is included in CGPA and the other grade is shown on the transcript.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these American University of Bahrain courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C (2.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.00 using this university's rounding rules.
