How the formula works

GPA multiplies each course credit by its grade points to get honor points, totals them, and divides by total credit units; CGPA uses the same method across all UTB courses. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Technology Bahrain config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: UTB's handbook states both that the higher grade is included and that the new grade is included for repeated courses. Because these official statements conflict, repeat handling requires manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Technology Bahrain courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (3.33 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (2.33 points)

The semester GPA is 3.22 and the updated CGPA is 3.05 using this university's rounding rules.
