How the formula works

TU Dublin states GPA is calculated for award classification using an ECTS credit-based formula and each letter grade has a numerical Grade Point Value. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Technological University Dublin config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: TU Dublin states failed modules may be repeated and reassessment marks are capped at the module pass mark, but repeat effects on honours eligibility and module attempts are conditional, so repeated-course handling is manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Technological University Dublin courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A1 (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B1 (3.20 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C1 (2.60 points)

The semester GPA is 3.27 and the updated CGPA is 3.06 using this university's rounding rules.
