How the formula works

UCD states grade points are multiplied by module credit values, summed, and divided by the number of credits used to calculate the GPA. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University College Dublin config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: UCD official GPA pages define grade points, grade-neutral credits, stage GPA, semester GPA, and award GPA, but repeat/remediation treatment depends on stage, award, programme structure, and credit-limit rules, so repeated-course replacement is manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University College Dublin courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.20 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (3.60 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (3.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.60 and the updated CGPA is 3.14 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Ireland GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for University College Dublin. Another university in Ireland can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at University College Dublin?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the University College Dublin config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

UCD official GPA pages define grade points, grade-neutral credits, stage GPA, semester GPA, and award GPA, but repeat/remediation treatment depends on stage, award, programme structure, and credit-limit rules, so repeated-course replacement is manual review.
