How the formula works

NUST states SGPA is total semester grade points divided by total semester credit hours. CGPA is total grade points earned during attendance divided by total credit hours completed. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the National University of Sciences and Technology config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The official NUST page reviewed states repetition and grade improvement are allowed as per policy, but it does not state a machine-calculable replacement rule.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these National University of Sciences and Technology courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x C+ (2.50 points)
  • Course 33 credits x F (0.00 points)

The semester GPA is 2.17 and the updated CGPA is 2.81 using this university's rounding rules.
