How the formula works

HKBU GPA is obtained by adding grade points gained and dividing by total units attempted; semester GPA and cumulative GPA use semester and cumulative attempts respectively. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Hong Kong Baptist University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: HKBU states only the highest grade is included in cGPA for courses taken more than once; if grades are the same, the latest grade is included.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Hong Kong Baptist University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C (2.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.00 using this university's rounding rules.
