How the formula works

PolyU GPA is accumulated subject grade point multiplied by subject credit value divided by total credit value for included subjects. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the The Hong Kong Polytechnic University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: PolyU's current public 4.30 grading source defines grade points and GPA formula, but a universal repeat replacement rule for all current programmes was not clear.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these The Hong Kong Polytechnic University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.30 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (3.30 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (2.30 points)

The semester GPA is 3.30 and the updated CGPA is 3.07 using this university's rounding rules.
