How the formula works

Leiden states each course is assigned ECTS credits and publishes grades on the Dutch 1-10 scale; this config calculates a credit-weighted average for the Leiden course grades entered. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Leiden University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Leiden resit and component-grade rules are programme/course-specific in the Prospectus and OER, so repeated-course handling is manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Leiden University courses:

Course 13 credits x 5.5 (5.50 points)
Course 23 credits x 5.8 (5.80 points)
Course 33 credits x 6.1 (6.10 points)

The semester GPA is 5.80 and the updated CGPA is 3.65 using this university's rounding rules.

Does this calculator use a generic Netherlands GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Leiden University. Another university in Netherlands can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.
