How the formula works

UvA states the GPA used for exchange checks is a weighted GPA over all passed courses and achieved ECTS, and that only courses completed with a passing grade are listed on the diploma supplement. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Amsterdam config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: UvA resit and programme-specific OER rules can change which attempt or rounded mark counts, so repeated-course handling is manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Amsterdam courses:

  • Course 13 credits x 5.5 (5.50 points)
  • Course 23 credits x 5.8 (5.80 points)
  • Course 33 credits x 6.1 (6.10 points)

The semester GPA is 5.80 and the updated CGPA is 3.65 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Netherlands GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for University of Amsterdam. Another university in Netherlands can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at University of Amsterdam?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the University of Amsterdam config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

UvA resit and programme-specific OER rules can change which attempt or rounded mark counts, so repeated-course handling is manual review.
