How the formula works

Yonsei total grade points are grade score multiplied by credit hours, divided by total credit units attempted for letter-graded courses. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with ceil rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with ceil rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Yonsei University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Yonsei's public undergraduate grading page defines grade points, weighting, exclusions, and rounding, but a general repeated-course replacement rule was not clear.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Yonsei University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (4.30 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (3.30 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (2.30 points)

The semester GPA is 3.30 and the updated CGPA is 3.07 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic South Korea GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Yonsei University. Another university in South Korea can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Yonsei University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies ceil rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Yonsei University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

Yonsei's public undergraduate grading page defines grade points, weighting, exclusions, and rounding, but a general repeated-course replacement rule was not clear.
