How the formula works

CGPA is the sum of quality points from all counted courses divided by the total credit hours of all counted courses. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with floor rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with floor rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the American University of Sharjah config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The public academic information page used for this config does not define a machine-calculable repeat rule. Repeated courses must be reviewed against the current catalog before automated CGPA replacement is enabled.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these American University of Sharjah courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C (2.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.00 using this university's rounding rules.
