How the formula works

GPA is the ratio of total quality points earned to total credit hours attempted; both SGPA and CGPA appear on the transcript. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Khalifa University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Degree credit for a repeated course is given once, all attempts remain on the transcript, and only the highest grade is used in GPA calculation.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Khalifa University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C (2.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.00 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic United Arab Emirates GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Khalifa University. Another university in United Arab Emirates can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Khalifa University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Khalifa University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

Degree credit for a repeated course is given once, all attempts remain on the transcript, and only the highest grade is used in GPA calculation.
