How the formula works

CGPA is calculated by dividing total grade points earned by total credits of courses taken in the program. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Higher Colleges of Technology config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: The current HCT catalog page used for this config gives the grade table and SGPA/CGPA formula but does not provide a machine-calculable repeated-course replacement rule.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Higher Colleges of Technology courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C (2.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.00 using this university's rounding rules.

What about repeated courses?

The current HCT catalog page used for this config gives the grade table and SGPA/CGPA formula but does not provide a machine-calculable repeated-course replacement rule.
