How the formula works

AUT GPA is calculated by assigning a numeric value to each grade, multiplying by paper points, summing those values, and dividing by the total paper points. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 3 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 3 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Auckland University of Technology config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: AUT official grading and scholarship GPA pages define grade points and weighting, but a general repeated-course replacement rule was not clear in public official sources.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.000 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Auckland University of Technology courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (9.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (6.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (3.00 points)

The semester GPA is 6.000 and the updated CGPA is 3.692 using this university's rounding rules.
