How the formula works

VUW GPA assigns points to grades, weights each grade by course points, sums weighted values, and divides by total points. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 1 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 1 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Victoria University of Wellington config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Victoria University of Wellington official guidance says all grades may be used for overall performance, while highest grade may be used for specific subsets; repeated-course treatment is therefore purpose-specific.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.0 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Victoria University of Wellington courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (9.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (6.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (3.00 points)

The semester GPA is 6.0 and the updated CGPA is 3.7 using this university's rounding rules.
