How the formula works

Massey GPA multiplies each grade point value by course credits, sums the weighted values, and divides by the credits contributing to the qualification. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Massey University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Massey official sources define weighted GPA and exclusions, but a general repeated-course replacement rule was not clear in public official sources.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Massey University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (9.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (6.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (3.00 points)

The semester GPA is 6.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.69 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic New Zealand GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Massey University. Another university in New Zealand can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Massey University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Massey University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

Massey official sources define weighted GPA and exclusions, but a general repeated-course replacement rule was not clear in public official sources.
