How the formula works

Carnegie Mellon QPA is calculated as total quality points divided by units factored; quality points are the grade point value multiplied by the course units. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: When a course is repeated, all grades are recorded on the official transcript and calculated in the student's QPA.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x D (1.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x X (0.00 points)

The semester GPA is 1.67 and the updated CGPA is 2.69 using this university's rounding rules.
