How the formula works

GPA is calculated by dividing accumulated grade points by completed credit hours; cumulative GPA divides total grade points by total completed credit hours. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 3 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 3 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Texas A&M University at Qatar config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Texas A&M repeat rules include multiple cases: failed repeats keep both grades in GPA, while a repeated course previously completed with B or better may not receive grade points unless repeatable for credit. Repeated courses require manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.000 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Texas A&M University at Qatar courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x D (1.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x U (0.00 points)

The semester GPA is 1.667 and the updated CGPA is 2.692 using this university's rounding rules.
