How the formula works

Semester GPA is total grade points earned in the semester divided by total academic hours registered in that semester; cumulative GPA is total GPA points earned divided by total hours earned at Qatar University. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Qatar University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: For undergraduate repeated courses, Qatar University uses the highest grade obtained in all attempts in the cumulative GPA, and repeated-course credits are not earned again.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Qatar University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x C+ (2.50 points)
  • Course 33 credits x D (1.00 points)

The semester GPA is 2.50 and the updated CGPA is 2.88 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Qatar GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Qatar University. Another university in Qatar can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Qatar University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Qatar University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

For undergraduate repeated courses, Qatar University uses the highest grade obtained in all attempts in the cumulative GPA, and repeated-course credits are not earned again.
