How the formula works

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course credit value by the final grade points, summing grade points earned, and dividing by total credits attempted. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Doha for Science and Technology config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: For repeated courses, lower grades are excluded from the cumulative GPA and only the highest grade obtained in the attempts is used.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Doha for Science and Technology courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x C+ (2.50 points)
  • Course 33 credits x D (1.00 points)

The semester GPA is 2.50 and the updated CGPA is 2.88 using this university's rounding rules.
