How the formula works

The Quality Point Index, also called GPA, is total quality points earned divided by total credits attempted, truncated to the third decimal place without rounding. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with floor rounding to 3 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with floor rounding to 3 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Georgetown University in Qatar config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Georgetown repeat rules depend on whether credit was previously earned: only the first passing grade is computed when a passed course is repeated, while both F and the later passing grade are computed when a failed course is repeated. This cannot be represented by the current replacement policy without manual review.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.000 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Georgetown University in Qatar courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C (2.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.000 and the updated CGPA is 3.000 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Qatar GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Georgetown University in Qatar. Another university in Qatar can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Georgetown University in Qatar?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies floor rounding to 3 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Georgetown University in Qatar config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

Georgetown repeat rules depend on whether credit was previously earned: only the first passing grade is computed when a passed course is repeated, while both F and the later passing grade are computed when a failed course is repeated. This cannot be represented by the current replacement policy without manual review.
