How the formula works

CGPA is the credit-hour-weighted average of grades obtained in all courses completed at HBKU, excluding AU, TC, P, NP, W, and I. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with floor rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with floor rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Hamad Bin Khalifa University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: If a course is repeated, both grades appear on the transcript, but only the latest grade is used to calculate the GPA.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Hamad Bin Khalifa University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (3.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C (2.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.00 using this university's rounding rules.
