How the formula works

Adelaide University GPA is the sum of course grade points multiplied by course units divided by the sum of course units, truncated to two decimals. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with floor rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with floor rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Adelaide University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Adelaide University's public grading procedure defines GPA calculation and included grades but does not provide a universal repeated-course GPA replacement rule.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Adelaide University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x HD (7.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x P (4.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x WF (1.50 points)

The semester GPA is 4.16 and the updated CGPA is 3.26 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Australia GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Adelaide University. Another university in Australia can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Adelaide University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies floor rounding to 2 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Adelaide University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

Adelaide University's public grading procedure defines GPA calculation and included grades but does not provide a universal repeated-course GPA replacement rule.
