How the formula works

ANU calculates GPA as the sum of grade point value multiplied by units, divided by total units, calculated to three decimal points. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 3 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 3 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Australian National University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: ANU's public GPA page defines the GPA formula and excluded grades but does not provide a general machine-calculable repeated-course replacement rule.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.000 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Australian National University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x HD (7.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x P (4.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x NCN (0.00 points)

The semester GPA is 3.667 and the updated CGPA is 3.154 using this university's rounding rules.

FAQ

Does this calculator use a generic Australia GPA formula?

No. This page uses the grading configuration for Australian National University. Another university in Australia can have different grade points, rounding rules, or pass/fail handling.

How is semester GPA calculated at Australian National University?

The calculator multiplies each GPA-counted grade point by its credits, adds the quality points, divides by GPA-counted credits, and applies standard rounding to 3 decimal places.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Australian National University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

ANU's public GPA page defines the GPA formula and excluded grades but does not provide a general machine-calculable repeated-course replacement rule.
