How the formula works

Monash GPA is the sum of grade value multiplied by unit credit points divided by total included unit credit points, calculated to three decimal places. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 3 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 3 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the Monash University config: supported pass grades are excluded from GPA points. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: Monash states all grades, including fail grades and grades from repeated units, are given a numerical value and averaged into GPA.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.000 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these Monash University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x HD (4.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x P (1.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x NH (0.30 points)

The semester GPA is 1.767 and the updated CGPA is 2.715 using this university's rounding rules.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Pass/fail grades marked as non-GPA in the Monash University config are excluded from GPA points, although credit may still be earned when the grade allows it.

What about repeated courses?

Monash states all grades, including fail grades and grades from repeated units, are given a numerical value and averaged into GPA.
