How the formula works

GPA is calculated by multiplying grade point by unit value for each course, summing course points, and dividing total course points by total unit value. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the University of Victoria config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: UVic states duplicate course grades do not replace old grades; both grades appear on the record and both are used in GPA calculations.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these University of Victoria courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (9.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B+ (6.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x C+ (3.00 points)

The semester GPA is 6.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.69 using this university's rounding rules.
