How the formula works

York's official calendar states grade point values are used to compute averages and only York University courses are included in grade point averages. For semester GPA, each GPA-counted course is converted to quality points by multiplying grade points by credits. The semester GPA is the total quality points divided by total GPA-counted credits, then rounded with standard rounding to 2 decimal places. The updated CGPA combines the student's existing quality points with this semester's quality points, then rounds with standard rounding to 2 decimal places.

Pass/fail and non-GPA grades are handled from the York University config: pass/fail handling is included only when the university data marks it as GPA-counted. Repeat-course handling uses this rule: York states repeated courses are processed so the grade and credit value of the second/latest applicable attempt are reflected in GPA and credits, with other attempts marked NCR.

Worked example

Suppose a student starts with 3.00 CGPA after 30 completed credits and takes these York University courses:

  • Course 13 credits x A+ (9.00 points)
  • Course 23 credits x B (6.00 points)
  • Course 33 credits x D+ (3.00 points)

The semester GPA is 6.00 and the updated CGPA is 3.69 using this university's rounding rules.
